Summer Camp
Information Packet
Introduction
For our 2023 Summer camp our troop will be attending Island Park BSA Camp located near Island Park in eastern Idaho. We will be meeting at 4:00 am on July 17, 2023 at Oquirrh Shadows Park. Our campsite at Island Park Camp is called “Colter's Cabin”
This packet is intended to provide scouts and parents information about the campout. It contains information relating to location, activities, itinerary, menu, a packlist and emergency information. Please refer to the sections below for information regarding each form. We will be conducting a pack check on Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Dave Yeager's house (4178 Firth Circle, South Jordan). At this time, all packs and gear will be loaded in to the scout trailer in order to facilitate a prompt departure on Monday.
Permission Slips & Medical Forms
All scouts and adults are required to submit to the troop the BSA Medical Form, Parts A, B & C. This form includes Informed Consent, Release Agreement, and Authorization and photographic release for this and all troop activities. This includes agreement with the Troop Technology policy.
Camp Logistics and Emergency Plan
The Campout Emergency Plan provides parents with emergency contact information, as well as the troop leaders plan in case of an emergency. It also provides parents with the plan for transporting the scouts to and from camp, along with their equipment.
Driving Directions
This is the route the troop will be taking to get to camp. In case of emergency, this is provided to parents in order to allow them to come to camp, if necessary.
Camp Packlist
A packlist is provided to each scout in order to help him pack the equipment required for the camp. Please encourage each scout to pack his own backpack, as this provides him the opportunity to learn what to pack and how to pack it. It also permits the scout to know what gear he has and where to find it within his pack. Should you have questions, please contact Hank Hoffer.
Camp Outdoor Program Plan
The Campout Outdoor Program Plan provides parents with an idea of the activities the scouts will be involved with.
Camp Menu
This year, the troop will be preparing its own food. Dave Yeager is acting as the camp cook, preparing meals selected by the scouts.
Duty Roster
Each day, the scouts will be assigned a camp duty, in order to keep camp running smoothly and properly. This is done by patrols, with descriptions for each responsibility listed and posted in Camp.

Schedule: Meet at Oquirrh Shadow Park (Firestation Park) Lot on Monday, July 17, 2023 at 4:30 am, departing no later than 5:00 am and return at approximately 2:30 pm on Saturday July 22, 2022. The troop will return to Hank Hoffer’s Home (10327 S 3970 W, South Jordan, UT) and will first clean the trailer before departing.
Activities: Activities will include a merit badge courses, swimming, canoeing, games, service projects, and others all at Camp Hunt.
Transportation of Scouts & Leaders: For this camp, there are 12 scouts and 5 adult leaders attending. Hank Hoffer is the Scoutmaster, with Matthew Carney, Matt Betts, and Joseph Tveter as Assistant Scoutmasters, and Dave Yeager as Camp Cook. All adult leaders are attending the entire week except for Matthew Carney, who will be arriving mid-week.
This will require a total of 17 seats to be available (16 for the trip up and 17 for the return). Drivers include David Yeager (5 seats), Matt Betts (6 seats), Joseph Tveter (5 seats) and Matthew Carney (5 seats). This provides sufficient seat belts for all youth and adults.
Route: Travel will be from South Jordan via I-15 north to Idaho Falls. In Idaho Falls, the troop will turn northeast following US20 until reaching the turnoff to Camp Hunt. The return trip will follow the opposite paths. The troop will return to Hank Hoffers home to empty the trailer and clean it out. Parents will be contacted when the troop is 30 min from returning and will be able to pick up their scouts at Hank Hoffer’s home once the trailer is clean.
Transportation of Equipment: All equipment will be transported in the scout trailer, towed by David Yeager’s truck. This trailer will be stored in camp in order to maintain a secure storage location for food. Only Adult leaders and the Troop Quartermaster are allowed to access the trailer. Any troop gear needing to be checked out to scouts will be tracked by the troop quartermaster.
Personal Equipment Storage: Each scout will store his personal gear in his patrol’s campsite, and will use the camp provided bear box for storage of his “smellables.”
Food Storage: All food will be stored in boxes and kept in the troop trailer at all times. Cold storage will be maintained in the troop trailer using coolers, which are refreshed with ice from the camp daily (Cook Crew is responsible for maintaining the level of ice).
In Case of Emergency – Cell service will be available throughout the camp. In case of emergency, please contact Matthew Carney directly at 801-413-7880.
In Case of Emergency in Camp – In case of an emergency involving a scout or adult during this camp, every effort will be made to contact the individual listed as the emergency contact person. In the event that this person cannot be reached, a medical provider selected by the adult leader in charge will provide proper treatment, including hospitalization, anesthesia, surgery, or injections of medication for any injured scout. Medical providers are authorized to disclose to the adult in charge examination findings, test results, and treatment provided for purposes of medical evaluation of the participant, follow-up and communication with the participant's parents or guardian, and/or determination of the participant's ability to continue in the program activities. The nearest hospital is located in Logan, UT, approximately 50 miles away. This hospital will only be used in case of emergency. The Bear Lake Community Heath Center is located in Garden City, approximately 1.5 miles away and will be used first.
Due to the conditions and activities involved, adult leaders will ensure every precaution is taken to provide a safe environment. However, if necessary, a parent may be contacted to come to camp to pick up a scout who is struggling. Should a parent be unable to be contacted, the adult scout leader in charge will coordinate with local leaders transportation in order to maintain safe conditions for all involved. At no point shall two-deep adult leadership not be observed, except under emergency conditions. Adult leaders will contact emergency officials once the adult leader in charge determines such assistance is required.
